Tolomei Palace
Located near the Basilica of Saint Agathe, at the beginning of the characteristic Via Bartolenga, Tolomei Palace is one of the most significant historical buildings in Asciano, linked to the prominent Sienese Tolomei family.
History
The first documented record of the building dates back to 1453, when it was owned by Gabrioccio di Nicolò Tolomei. A later source from 1491 specifies its location: the residence, declared by the heirs Pieralselmo and Giovan Battista Tolomei, was situated near the “Porta della Pieve”, an ancient entrance to the village that no longer exists.
The building, which likely incorporates a pre-existing medieval tower house, features a compact structure with a double-pitched roof. The façade, austere yet elegant, is characterized by:
-
The stone coat of arms of the Tolomei family, still clearly visible
-
Two refined arched windows (originally likely biforas), with recessed arches: round arches on the intrados and slightly pointed arches on the extrados
Although the openings were modified in more recent times, they still retain significant stylistic value.
The palace is an interesting example of late-medieval noble architecture, bearing witness to the prestige and presence of the Tolomei family in the region.
