Spannocchi Palace
Located in the Prato suburb, just outside the town walls, Palazzo Spannocchi is one of the most fascinating historical buildings in Asciano, though it is shrouded in an air of mystery.
History
Its medieval origins are not fully documented, but the architectural features and some land registry references from the early 14th century suggest that a manor house already stood on this site in 1318, known as palatium in plano prati.
Over time, the complex evolved, merging two separate buildings into a single structure.
According to two inscriptions on the façade, the building was renovated and expanded in 1577 by the will of Fabio Spannocchi, a Sienese patrician, who transformed it into both a noble residence and a commercial warehouse. The restoration was part of a broader project promoted by the Medici Grand Dukes, aimed at upgrading the old post stations that stood along the Via Lauretana.
Architecture
The sober yet solid architecture, the large ground-floor spaces once used as warehouses and workshops, and the noble residence on the upper floors tell a story of functionality and prestige, striking a balance between the rural and urban worlds.
Until the 1950s, the palace also had its own well, now lost, which served both sections of the building.
