Carabinieri barracks-Former Casa del Fascio

  • The current Carabinieri barracks in Asciano occupy a building with a complex and significant history, closely tied to the political and social changes of the 20th century.

  • History

The building was originally designed as Casa del Fascio, as part of the urban plan promoted by the podestà Gino Tesi in 1934. Construction began in 1935, funded by the proceeds from the closure of the Circolo Operaio, and was entrusted to the Sienese engineer Armando Sabatini. The project also included an internal cinema, a common recreational feature in fascist headquarters of the time.

The inauguration took place on November 27, 1938, in the presence of the fascist leader Achille Starace, as documented by municipal records and historical photographs. The town was decorated with drapes, flags, and banners, and the ceremony included parades and public speeches at the nearby "G. Marconi" stadium.

  • Architecture

Architecturally, the building was characterized by a littoria tower (its travertine cladding was never completed), a balcony for public speeches, and a semicircular structure bearing the inscription “Anno XVII dell’Era Fascista,” which corresponds to 1938.

With the fall of the regime, in 1948 the building was stripped of its fascist decorations and repurposed as the Casa del Popolo, a function it retained until the early 1950s. Since 1951, it has continuously housed the Carabinieri barracks, while the former cinema hall was converted into service housing in 1982.

Located outside Porta Massini, in the area known as “il Prato,” the building today stands as a tangible testament to Fascist-era architecture and its postwar conversion to civilian and institutional uses.
