On Sunday, July 13, the Cammino della Traslazione returns—an approximately 28 km pilgrimage/hike on mostly gravel roads and forest paths, from Asciano to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Vertighe, the designated Church of the Jubilee of Hope for 2025 in the Diocese of Arezzo, Cortona, and Sansepolcro.

Departure: 8:00 AM from Asciano (SI)

Arrival: 6:15 PM at the Sanctuary of the Vertighe (AR)

Following the walk: Historical reenactment and convivial gathering.

This walk is inspired by an ancient popular tradition: on July 7, 1100, a stone chapel housing an image of the Madonna was miraculously transported by angels from the countryside of Asciano up to the hills of Vertighe to prevent a fratricidal dispute over an inheritance. This legend is depicted in the sanctuary’s façade rose window, an interior fresco, and is recorded in various sources—most notably the 1580 Historiae Camaldulenses by the Camaldolese monk Agostino Fortunio.

Beyond its symbolic and religious significance, the Sanctuary also holds historical and infrastructural importance. In 1964, Madonna delle Vertighe was proclaimed the Patron Saint of the Autostrada del Sole (A1 motorway).
