The work at Monte Oliveto Maggiore since 1319
Exhibition of documents, photos and testimonies
Work is a fundamental aspect of monastic life according to the Rule of Saint Benedict (chapter 48), which Bernardo Tolomei and his companions chose to follow in 1319, giving rise to the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, in the heart of the Crete Senesi, in the municipality of Asciano.
Through documents, photographs, and unique testimonies, the exhibition offers an insightful journey into the daily work of the monks, who from the very beginning dedicated themselves to agriculture, making more fertile what was once known as the desert of Accona.
Many activities, such as those of the scribes and pharmacists, have evolved over the centuries into the restoration of ancient books and the production of herbal-based liqueurs.
On display in the Ancient Library are curious objects: the famous Benedictine Plaster, modern manuscripts for religious or scientific use, a historic advertising sign for the digestive liqueur Flora, and old liqueur labels, along with ancient books from the Monastic Pharmacy and Olivetan scientists.
To help contextualize the displayed testimonies, the exhibition is accompanied by panels in both Italian and English.
Exhibition on display until September 28th, 2025.
